Amsterdam-based start-up MX3D has, in partnership with TU Delft, developed robotic technology that aims to 3D-print a steel bridge on location by 2017. The idea of the bridge is to show the work that robots, engineers and designers can do together.

By printing with industrial robots with 6-axes of freedom the design is not limited to a square box, like 3d printing is. Because of this, the MX3D robot can print with various metals, without support structures. In a process similar to 3d printing, the robot constantly adds small amounts of molten metal. This allows the robot to print in mid-air.
