Description
Joost_Host robot is an intelligent robot which will welcome visitors to the Science Centre Delft and provide general and navigational information when necessary. It will be able to navigate the entrance hall and certain areas of the Science Centre autonomously. The robot will be able to assist the visitors in a number of ways. First of all, users can indicate if they want to visit a certain facility within the Science Centre, like the restrooms, wardrobe or coffee bar.

The robot can escort visitors to these facilities or provide them with directions. Secondly, the robot will communicate with other robots in the Science Centre. This way, it can tell users if there are free tables in the coffee corner, or free slots in the wardrobe, for example.

Enabling these assisting functions are the two ways the robot can communicate with visitors. These include both input via a touchscreen display in the robots head and speech input using voice recognition. This allows for intuitive interaction with the robot, an important fea- ture for a host. Another important feature of the robot is its ability to change the length of its spine according to the length of the visitor it is communicating with. This way the robot’s head can be on eye-level of the visitor to improve the user-friendliness of the interaction.
